Nathaniel Branden.
He transformed the life of thousands with a simple system anyone can use.
Here are his 6 pillars to find joy, confidence, and success.
Who he was:
Branden was a therapist - and also the lover of Ayn Rand.
He began researching self-esteem when he was 24 years old, as a psychology student.
In his patients he found a theme of feelings of inadequacy, guilt, shame, inferiority, and low self-acceptance and trust.
Why we need self-esteem:
These issues all related to self-esteem.
He found that it is a basic need required for healthy development.
Just like you need water, you need self-esteem to:
• Achieve goals
• Learn and grow
• Handle criticism
• Take on challenges
• Form healthy relationships
The 6 pillars:
Branden discovered behaviors that are both a sign of high self-esteem, and that also increase it - he called them the 6 pillars.
They are:
• Living Consciously
• Self-Acceptance
• Self-Responsibility
• Self-Assertiveness
• Living Purposefully
• Personal Integrity
Living Consciously
Being fully present and aware in the current moment, using your mind to its fullest potential.
This is essential because all other practices are built on top of it.
Components:
• Focus
• Clarity
• Awareness
• Responsibility
• Respect for Reality
Self-Acceptance
Accepting yourself as you are in the present moment, while still being open to growth and improvement.
Components:
• Being on your own side
• Accepting yourself as you are
• Experiencing and accepting all your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors
Self-Responsibility
Taking ownership of your life and well-being, actions and their consequences.
This includes choosing personal growth and development.
Components:
• Personal Accountability
• Active Orientation
• Self-Reliance
Self-Assertiveness
Standing up for yourself and your needs, wants, and values.
Seeking appropriate forms of self-expression while taking responsibility for communicating your thoughts and feelings.
Components:
• Authenticity
• Personal Boundaries
• Respectful Communication
Living Purposefully
Using our powers to achieve goals by setting clear objectives and working to accomplish them.
Responsibility for achieving our chosen aims and being results-oriented.
